Why We Say No to Palm Oil: What you may not know about this impactful ingredient
Palm oil has become a hot topic in recent years, and with good reason. It’s an extremely common ingredient used in everything from toothpaste formulas, soap, and make-up to ice cream, chocolate, and nut butter.
So, why is palm oil suddenly coming under fire? It’s because palm oil production has a devastating impact on our forests, wildlife, and humans.
Palm oil is produced in hot, humid climates. In places like Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia, forests are bulldozed and torched daily to extract this much sought-after ingredient. As forests are cleared, endangered species such as the orangutan, Borneo elephant, and Sumatran tiger are displaced and pushed closer to extinction. In fact, it’s estimated that we lose 25 orangutans every day due to palm oil production.
It’s not just animals and forests that suffer. Palm oil-based biofuels actually have three times the climate impact of traditional fossil fuels. The palm oil industry has also been condemned by Amnesty International for its labour abuses. Child labour and labour abuse are widespread within the palm oil industry.
So, why do companies put palm oil in toothpaste? The only reason palm oil is used in toothpaste is to make it foam. It is not necessary and certainly doesn’t help support your oral health. We don’t think that’s a good enough reason, do you?
At Spotlight Oral Care, we vow to protect our wildlife, precious rainforests, and the people who work in them, by never using palm oil.
